After deciding to be a web entrepreneur, the next step is to create a business plan. Business plans are as essential to a web entrepreneur as blueprints are to a construction worker. There are many ways a person can go about making money with the Internet. Options include selling products as a wholesaler or retailer, selling services, promoting products or services as an affiliate partner, selling advertising, selling email or demographic information, selling subscriptions to sites and any number of other ways and combinations of money making ideas.

 A good business plan will include details on the service or products you will be offering, growth goals for your new business, projected expenses and losses, employee projections, and any other information you will need to clearly outline your successful business. Though there are many approaches to the actual construction of a business plan, a month by month or quarter by quarter analysis is common. 

For example, if your online business will be selling digital items or widgets, you may want to go through, month by month and estimate the total number of items/widgets you will sell, the cost of selling these items/widgets, expenditures on marketing, hosting and overhead, and any other foreseeable factors you can think of. If within six months you want to begin selling skyhooks as well as widgets/digital items, this should also be accounted for in your business plan.

There are a few things that you can do that are cost effective, here are a few steps that should be followed in order to get the most out of free marketing and advertising venues. This will ensure the most effective marketing campaign and often ensures a higher success rate when scaled up.

But before you do anything you should try and get this step completed, it does not need to be 100% perfect but it is important to make sure that your website is prepared before you start.


So this is a quick outline of some of the things you should consider doing to help market your site properly once it is set up.


·         Firstly, and you would be surprised at how many business don’t do this or forget, or do not know how to even go about doing this step. The first thing is to sign your site up to search engines and directories. Look for the newest, most famous directories online and list your website with them, as well as the big names e.g. Yahoo, Google, Bing, Yelp, Xlang, Dogpile, etc. This is the easiest and by far most efficient way to get free website visitors for site or promotions. Simply put you have to be indexed with search engines and directories to be found in search results.



·         Next, identify your forums and social sites relevant to your subject (niche). One of the reasons that forums exist is because they offer free promotion to everyone. They are also a source of help and general communication on a topic or subject. Simply sign up, log in, participate and post actively, and let other people know about your website in every post that you submit. This is a good and financially inexpensive way to attract visitors to your site.


·         Press releases stay around forever and ever, I found one that I did when I started on my very first site four or five years ago, and it still gets clicked even though that site is no longer around, so you know what to submit to – you got it. The next step is to create press releases that will be helpful to you. Free your writing spirit and write a press release that focuses on promoting your website. This is a free promotion tool that can be done as often as you like, got an event coming up or a new service or product, it is a great way to tell the world about what is happening in your business.  Write a short paragraph and then send it to friends, family, online e zines, article directories and other sources of media. By doing this, you are almost guaranteeing yourself massive amounts of traffic.


·         Quality is one of the last things to mention, but long term is the most important, as it is one of the things that will keep website visitors coming back, is to make sure to produce relevant, high quality content, articles or information. Make sure that what you are writing and submitting to people has to do with what you are selling or offering. As it does not make sense to have a dieting or weight loss website, that has content or articles written about home improvement or affiliate marketing. Focus on your particular area of expertise. Articles can be used as your advertisements when submitted to article directories and are a great source of free promotion, but this can all be a bit time consuming.


As more data becomes available through research and your experience you will be able to make changes as needed to your business plan. I am of the belief that it is generally a good idea to make profit projections on the low end to start with. If you believe you can sell between 10 and 100 items your first month, it is better to plan to sell only 10, and be pleasantly surprised when you sell 55, rather than to set your hopes for 100 and fall short of goals that were optimistic but attainable at the start, but have become unrealistic yet necessary for the survival of your business. So what I am saying here is being positive is fantastic, but make your goals step by step achievable.

After you have a good plan for your business, the next step will be to research your business. But that’s a subject for another time.
